College Costs – Scholarships are now replacing student loans ... for student athletes

Colleyville, TX – March 6, 2011 - SASF has helped one million families reduce college education costs.

The Student Athlete Scholarships foundation, a volunteer non-profit group teaches BOTH families AND college coaches how to successfully recruit one another. Our foundation, SASF, helps both groups succeed.

And just when it seemed life couldn’t get any more difficult …. It did.

The current financial crisis is a runaway beast, attacking anything in its path. Devouring home equity, banks, and insurance giants, this week it suddenly struck at all college-bound teenagers when it devoured student loans.

Families now realized that their lifeboat was missing. Though they never wanted to borrow for college expenses they always knew they could, if all else failed. And then one day, suddenly the lifeboat and the life preservers were gone … while the ship is swirling in a gigantic financial typhoon.

We were soccer parents in the 90's; and were struck by thousands of college scholarship opportunities created by the rapid growth of soccer, and dramatic college cost increases (CNN: college cost growth surpassed even health care costs). We began exploring college preparation with our five year old and ten year old daughters.

See: http://www.soccer.com/channels/features.php?story=collegefree It's about the importance of beginning your preparation EARLY.

Our two daughters played soccer, got good grades in school, earned college soccer scholarships, then graduated DEBT FREE into great careers. A college education costs well over $100,000. The average college graduate today faces over $25,000 in undergraduate debts; costs are growing at 10% per year ... that's 6X family income growth!!

As our young daughters progressed through school and sports, we took good notes, and with the help of college coaches, wrote about what we were learning ... that was 1 million magazines ago!

Our readers know that college expenses can be offset with money from five different sources:
1.	Athletic scholarships
2.	Merit scholarships
3.	Work/study
4.	Grants
5.	Debt (when student loans are available)

Please understand that lofty prices asked by colleges (in Forbes Magazine’s America’s 50 Colleges, the top 10 aexceeded $50,000 per year) are primarily “fixed costs” (facilities and staff), while the “out-of-pocket” (cash) cost to fund a full scholarship student athlete is primarily food, costing only about $1000 per year, at Princeton or Centre College or The College of Charleston or Stanford or Indiana or your nearby state college.

For this important reason, the actual cash (out-of-pocket) cost for a student athlete's food is still easily funded by universities, even in these difficult times. In fact, that $1000 may be the best investment a college can make in the marketing of its educational services to the public. College sports sell seats ... seats in the classroom and in the stadium, The most watched college event in the world is always the Army - Navy football game. Colleges know they need sports and they need student athletes to win games.

While college coach travel expense cash budgets are slim, their scholarships allotments are generous; the four kinds of scholarships money above can still help meet a family’s financial needs. College coaches are expected to win games … every season … they are betting their jobs on the work of teenagers! This pressure to survive makes coaches very creative at financing scholarships packages for the talented players they need!

The GOOD NEWS for families of student athletes is, therefore, that in spite of today’s financial crisis, business as usual continues at college for student athletes, while students without athletic skills to make them more marketable, are facing one more new hurdle ... funding education ... an obstacle for which we do not see a solution.

Soccer is our family’s favorite sport, but it represents only about ten percent of college varsity (scholarship) sports; accordingly our publications and methods are designed to work in ALL college sports and can help over 500,000 college student athletes.

In fact, we take great pride in demonstrating this versatility, by pointing to a reader whose athletic scholarship at prestigious Columbia University was $160,000 … her sport? CHESS! Call and we’ll send you a reprint of her success story from our magazine.

College coaches are always delighted when a well qualified (both athletically and academically) student athlete approaches them. Our publications are designed to help both sellers (families) and buyers (coaches) meet.
Tom Saxton's Soccer Camp ... much more than just training ...

Entering his 20th season as head coach of the Michigan State women's soccer program, Tom Saxton has spent more than half of his life involved in Spartan soccer.

A 1983 graduate of Michigan State, Saxton earned three letters as a player. In 1986, he returned to help assist legendary Spartan soccer coach Joe Baum with both the men’s and the then-fledgling women’s program before being appointed the second head coach in the history of the women’s program on June 1, 1991.

In total, Saxton has guided 143 players to Academic All-Big Ten honors since women’s soccer was incorporated into the Big Ten in 1994, the second-most out of any school in the conference. He has also helped 26 players earn All-Big Ten honors, including the first Conference Player of the Year, Karen Winslow in 1994.

He has helped the team transition seamlessly into the fabric of one of the toughest conferences in the NCAA, helping the Spartans to two NCAA Tournament appearances, 10 Big Ten Tournament trips and four winning campaigns in the conference’s 13 years.

Saxton, a two-time Big Ten Conference coach of the year, earned his 150th victory in the opening-round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament. It was MSU’s first-ever NCAA Tournament win. Saxton’s Spartans posted a 12-6-5 record last season, their sixth-straight season with double-digit wins, including a 6-2-2 mark in conference action, the team’s best-ever Big Ten mark.

Summer Camps: Much More Than Training

Every camp here has been selected in our Best Soccer Camps book. The current edition of our Best Soccer Camps book contains only 100 selected camps from the more than 500 summer soccer camps.

Is this approach working? When have you seen so many camp ads and articles, anywhere, ever? Think about this. We talk to more serious soccer families and more truly dedicated college coaches, in one year, than anyone. And we help readers find the good camps that can affect their college futures, and their lives.

Now, consider what serious players do for top camps. Competitive players make the camp a success, elevate the level of play, and challenge other players. They stimulate the coaching staff. Everyone learns more and has more fun. And sometimes, a player catches the eye of a coach because, "Those campers were working so hard they looked like college players." ... the rest ... perhaps, is history!

Readers refer to our Student Athlete magazine as the "Consumer Reports" of College-Bound sports. We are proud to have earned your respect. When we compile our Special Campers Issues we invite only camps recommended in our Best Camps book to advertise. We've done our homework. All of these camps are good!

As parents of serious student athletes, we know how expensive, yet important, good camp selection is. Add the camp's cost, airfare, new clothes, new equipment, spending money, telephone, ground transportation and family gifts ... a residential camp’s cost can total $1000!

What are the alternatives, once you've learned how to how play, for getting noticed by the college coaches?

The three most important things to do, to increase your chances of playing sports in college are:

1. Participate in the ODP
2. Win state cup with your club team
3. Attend camp at the college where you hope to play

Camp selection is the only event YOU can control. By the end of the camp, both you and the coach will know if his college is in your future. If the news is not good, ask him to recommend colleges where you can play, and to use him as a reference.
John O'Connor's Soccer Academy .. much more than just training ...

John O'Connor enters his fifth season as the head men's soccer coach at Rhode Island in 2010-11. In four seasons with the Rams, O'Connor has compiled a 38-30-13 record while coaching four MLS draft picks, three adidas/MLS Player Combine invitees, an All-American, eight NSCAA All-Region selections, two A-10 Players of the Year, 15 All-Conference picks and two Academic All-Conference honorees.

The University of Rhode Island men’s soccer program has a proven track record of developing quality talent. Winners of five Atlantic-10 championships, six Atlantic-10 tournament titles and six NCAA Division I tournament berths, URI has developed players who’ve gone on to play in MLS, USL and abroad. The same attention to detail that defines Rhody men’s soccer is found at the Rhode Island Elite Soccer Academy. Led by Head Coach John O’Connor, a former NCAA Coach of the Year, participants are subject to the same training and that makes URI players what they are today. Campers have the opportunity to train in technique as well as tactics, hear from experts on nutrition, strength, speed, agility and learn what it takes to play college soccer and get to the next level.

The staff of the Rhode Island Elite Soccer Academy features college coaches with extensive experience teaching and evaluating players. REISA attracts athletes from around the Northeast which created an exciting atmosphere of learning. Campers will train on URI’s beautiful Kingston campus in the South County region of the Ocean State. While on campus participants will work alongside college players from the University of Rhode Island as well as other colleges and universities around the country. In our minds, these are the components that separate our camp from others.

Jim Blankenship's FGCU Soccer Camps ... much more than just training ...

“I like the challenge of developing a new program. FGCU is a hidden secret in soccer but I look forward to getting it started.” Coach Jim Blankenship

Jim Blankenship has been selected as the first-ever women’s soccer head coach at Florida Gulf Coast University. A veteran of nearly two decades in collegiate coaching, Blankenship will begin his duties in July. The Eagles’ first season of competition will be in the fall of 2007.

During his career, Blankenship’s teams have won three national championships, appeared in eight straight final fours, received two NCAA Division I national tournament bids and graduated over 40 all-Americans and 18 academic all-Americans. His collegiate head coaching record stands at 241-70-9.

This will be the fourth start-up program under Blankenship’s direction. Previously he developed new programs as the head coach at the University of Miami, Lynn University and St. Thomas University.

From 1998 to 2002, he developed the program at the University of Miami, leading the Hurricanes to the conference tournament in year two and receiving an NCAA tournament bid in just the fourth season of competition. Under his direction, the Hurricanes climbed as high as No. 14 in the national rankings and Blankenship's recruiting classes were recognized as some of the top-rated collegiate classes between 1998 and 2001.

Prior to UM, Blankenship spent 12 years as the first-ever head women's soccer coach at Lynn University. He earned NAIA Coach of the Year honors five times (1988, 1990, 1992, 1994 & 1995) and NSCAA Coach of the Year twice (1992 and 1994).

Jim and George VanLinder (Oklahoma) are, in our famly’s experience, the very best. Together they were the first college coaches our two daughters encountered in our Florida Soccer Club, Team Boca. Their kind and thoughtful manner brought our daughters along the path from sometimes silly pre-teen agers to serious club players who won state championships. And then, with full college scholarships, on to become All-Americans and graduate from a Division I college, debt free, into successful careers.

Of course, those events did not go unnoticed, and became the foundation for our Student Athlete Scholarships Foundation. That was over 1 million magazines ago!

St. Louis has been a soccer hotbed. We believe we can compete for a national championship every time we step on the field, and you have to shoot for the top.

The Billikens reached the NCAA Tournament in four times. They claimed three consecutive Conference USA championships (2001-04) and back-to-back A-10 regular-season championships (2006-07). The 2001 and 2003, squads reached the quarterfinals, while the 2002 team advanced to the NCAA Tournament's third round.

Mike McGinty was named head coach of the Saint Louis University men's soccer program on March 10, 2010. McGinty has spent the past 11 seasons as an assistant at the University of Virginia, including the past two as associate head coach. During his tenure at UVA, he helped the Cavaliers to the 2009 NCAA Championship and four Atlantic Coast Conference crowns.

Ben Freakley's School of Soccer ... much more than just training ...

Since 1839, The Virginia Military Institute has produced leaders for every field of endeavor. VMI’s unique educational philosophy, emphasizes the qualities of honor, integrity, and responsibility.

VMI offers qualified young men and women a demanding combination of academic study and rigorous military training, and grants B.A. and B.S. degrees in fourteen disciplines within the general fields of engineering, science, and liberal arts.

VMI’s academic breadth is diverse, and curricula for the selected major begins the first year. About 30 percent of cadets major in civil, electrical, or mechanical engineering, more than 40 percent of VMI graduates major in liberal arts fields, and the two most popular majors are economics/business and history.

In the 2002 U.S. News & World Report, “America’s Best Colleges,” VMI claims the number one spot as the nation’s “top public liberal arts college,” and its engineering program remains in the top one-third of “Best Undergraduate” accredited programs at schools offering only Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. In separate rankings for engineering “specialities,” VMI’s civil engineering program ranks 6th , and its mechanical engineering program, 17th. Alumni include Nobel Prize winner George C. Marshall and nine RhodesScholars.

Today 1,300 young men and women in the VMI Corps of Cadets represent forty-six states and twenty foreign countries, over 100 study abroad each year, one-third compete in athletics, and all have significant leadership opportunities.

VMI cadets uphold an honor system as old as the Institute. An oath of honor is taken by each cadet, “not to lie, cheat, or steal, nor tolerate those who do,” and the oath is practiced in daily life. As it is basic to cadet life, it is ingrained, and builds strong character. Honor is at the cornerstone of every cadet’s lifelong commitment to integrity, duty, self-discipline, and self-reliance.

A small school playing in NCAA Division I means that every game in every sport is a challenge. But VMI cadets come prepared to compete. Head Men’s Soccer Coach Ben Freakley will help serious student athletes explore the opportunities at VMI. His camp is the best place to begin your journey ... a journey that can change your life.

Stanford - Creating a great camp experience

Many colleges have developed summer camp programs to help players develop their skills and knowledge of the game. At Stanford we are taking the notion of the summer camp several steps further, creating a camp dedicated to identifying college prospects and preparing for the college experience. Here are a few of the ways Stanford is different and, we believe, better.

The camp coaches, selected from outstanding colleges across the country, are great teachers of the game and enjoy helping you reach your potential. Camp provides them with scouting opportunities to evaluate and recruit campers.

In the boys ID Camp, you help design your own curriculum. Instead of being forced into generic team training, Stanford offers a variety of topics on and off the field. You choose what fits your needs. Some topics planned for this summer include: developing a personal soccer fitness program, choosing a college, zonal defending systems, goalkeeper specific programs, improving wide area attacking, etc.

The girls camp is staffed with top coaches, international and college players. Many of Stanford’s present players were first identified at this camp. Select games under the stadium lights, goalkeeper specific training and an emphasis on technical perfection are all important elements of this camp.

Some of our finest Stanford student-athletes ... top college players ... live and eat with campers. Many have gone on to play with professional and national teams. Living and training with them, 24 hours a day, is a great opportunity for the aspiring student athlete.

At Stanford we want our camp environment to replicate that of the university by offering opportunities to challenge you and help you reach your potential.

David Saward's Vermont Soccer School ... much more than just training ...

The Vermont Soccer School

Now in his 26th year on the Panther coaching staff, Saward has developed one of the most consistently successful soccer programs in the country. He has led the team to 22 post-season appearances in 25 years, including five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances ('94-'98).

In one of soccer’s best kept secrets, the Vermont Soccer School has, over the 31 years of it’s existence been the flag ship for soccer player development in Vermont and Northern New England.

The tradition for player and coach development through the camp is second to none in the area. A study of the names who have attended the camp is a ‘who’s who’ of soccer tradition, including Ron McEachen, Skidmore College, Jesse Cormier, Head Coach at University of Vermont, Wade Jean, Head Men’s Coach at St Michaels College, Mike Noonan, Head Men’s Coach at Brown University, Devin O’Neill, Head Men’s Coach at Gettysberg College, Peter Albright Head Women’s Coach at University of Richmond, and so the list goes on.

Players are housed on one of Northern New England’s most scenic and safe campuses at Johnson State College. The emphasis of camp is to allow children to foster a lifelong love for the game of soccer, while striving to experiment and extend their own playing abilities.

The camp is centered around the phrase: “The greatest teacher of the game of soccer is soccer itself”
Under the expert eyes of some great soccer educators children are provided the opportunity to build upon their skill base. All activities are focused towards the game itself with the emphasis being upon having fun while playing the worlds “Beautiful Game”.

We hope to see you in beautiful Vermont for a soccer camp experience that will be both educational and enjoyable.

Pat Grecco is intimately aware of American college soccer teams workings, current recruiting requirements, budgets, coaching mentality, playing style, competitors, athletic department mission and a real understanding of the chemistry that is so important in successful placement. American college coaches want to recruit qualified foreign players, but simply do not know how to make themselves feel comfortable with the risks of importing student athletes from thousands of miles away.

Remember, American college coaches are betting their own jobs on assembling teams that win games. Pat Grecco's student athlete candidates consistently confirm her appreciation of each college coach's unique requirements. Her thorough understanding of how to deliver talented foreign players to the American college game is a reason why she was inducted into the Soccer Hall of Fame. Thousands of American college coaches bet their jobs on Pat Grecco.

(Pat Grecco - 100% success rate in placing student athletes)

Pat said, “Not so bad for a girl from the Bronx.”

Translation: Everyone has heard of Brooklyn, but maybe not The Bronx ... the second most visible of New York City’s five boroughs is a microcosm of the United Nations ... ethnic villages ... populated and refreshed with waves of ambitious risk-taking immigrants whose roots grew from Europe 150 years ago. Welcome to The Bronx.

We have known Pat Grecco for over twenty years; a contributing author and advisor to our publications, saying we love her is an understatement. Our readers know her as “the single person who has helped more student atletes get to college ... more than anyone one the planet.”

When we met Pat in the early ‘90s she was a soccer mom who had successfully launched her own student athletes into their college educations on soccer scholarships, and was busy directing College Advisory work for the largest US Club, the 100,000 strong Long Island Junior Soccer Leaague.

It was 1991. We had relocated from Europe to Florida, after living in several European countries for around 12 years. Our two girls were born in Germany and England, and we all returned with a sense that student athletes, worldwide, yearned to study and play in America, but there was simply no help for them.

Soccer was and is the world’s most popular sport, so our family was drawn to that fledgling sport in America. Simultaneously, we were struck with the runaway costs of college and the little known fact that colleges were funding thousands of student athletes ... 50,000 in soccer ... 500,000 in all varsity sports.

Lights went off in our brains and our family was soon publishing magazines to help American student athletes get to college, and get on the teams, often with full scholarships. Our two girls, with Pat Grecco’s help, earned $250,000 in college soccer scholarships.

(What does all of this have to do with the Bronx, you are thinking, eh?)

We often compare our publications to Pat Grecco’s consulting work as Home Depot Vs. your building contractor. We at SASF prefer to focus on publishing and distributing information to many DIY (Do It Yourself) people Vs. turnkey consulting. You want a garage built? We sell boards, nails, paint ... Pat delivers the finished garage and guarantees it.

Finally, the point. When a student athlete, Floris DeKlerk, contacted me from Holland, one of our favorite countries, and some say, "The Birthplace of European Football" I immediately understood that he needed one-on-one consulting, and introduced him to Pat. Her detailed knowledge of American college soccer programs, paired Floris with a coach who appreciated the high quality of soccer in Holland. Soon Floris DeKlerk was playing on a scholarship at Davis and Elkins College in West Virginia. Pat’s International service was born.

Floris from Holland, was placed by Pat years ago, Today Pat is recognized by American college coaches and their athletic directors, as the leader in the placement of foreign student athletes, worldwide. The outstanding skills and commitment brought by those foreign players, today make winning teams in every Division of the most successful American colleges.

Looking back at why the pieces came together so perfectly and have made her the leader in this field. Here are some factors:

1. Soccer is the world’s most popular sport creating a vast, deep pool of talent, worldwide; conversely, American soccer continues to live in the shadow of football, basketball and baseball, failing to compete successfully at the world level. American colleges want foreign players and are rewarded with exciting wins when coaches manage to recruit them. Enter Pat Grecco.

2. Pat’s early work was entirely soccer, she is well known by most American college soccer coaches. A member of The Soccer Hall of Fame, she has placed thousands of talented soccer student athletes and earned the respect of college coaches (today her work has expanded to include all college sports).

3. American college coaches are uncomfortable with recruiting abroad, lacking travel budgets, language skills and international awareness. Most do not even own current passports.

4. Pat is intimately aware of American college soccer teams workings, current recruiting requirements, budgets, coaching mentality, playing style, competitors, athletic department mission and a sense of each program's unique chemistry that is so important in successful placement.

5. Student Athlete Scholarships publications are visible, worldwide, due to of our affiliations with EUROSPORT and Time, Inc. Pat is the only consultant that we recommend because of her professionalism and 100% track record. She has never failed to place a student athlete into a college opportunity.

Not so bad for a girl from the Bronx. The significance? Pat’s worldwide consulting service operates from New York, near the Bronx where she grew up. Today she is the meeting point for her contacts with thousands of American college coaches. Those coaches are the “buyers” of the work that student athletes “sell” for education. And with every athlete she places, her reputation for successful bonding of college opportunity with athletic talent grows and grows. Kind of like the Stock Exchange, also in New York.

If you are a student athlete with good sports skills and good grades, visit Pat Grecco’s website at: www.CollegeBoundAthlete.com. America is the land of opportunity for everyone who is willing to work hard and grow ... student athletes are welcome.

U Rochester Elite Camps ... much more than just training ...

The University of Rochester Elite Camp is a residential camp designed for the advanced player. The camp combines individual skills with advanced team tactics to improve the decision making and speed of play for each player. Competitive evening matches enhance development and provide players the opportunity to showcase their ability and potential to perform at the collegiate level.

The University of Rochester is highly selective being one of only 25 schools in the nation named a “new ivy” by Kaplan/Newsweek. Our first-class facilities include the $15 million dollar Goergen Athletic Center with state of the art varsity weight room, and 5,000 seat Fauver Stadium complete with fieldturf, lights, press box, locker rooms, and training room. The beautiful Rush Rhees Library holding over 3.5 million volumes recently completed an $8 million dollar renovation.

Camp director Chris Apple, in his 8th year as the men’s head coach, has an impressive142-57-24 record.

Women’s head coach and girls camp director Thomas Dardaganis was promoted to the position of head coach of the University of Rochester women's soccer team at the end of the 2010 season. He spent 14 seasons as Assistant Coach for his alma mater.
