Summer camps are, in our opinion, the best way to get to know the college coach you may some day play for. Coaches use camps to train and evaluate future members of their teams. Summer camps provide an ideal environment for both student athlete and coach to thoroughly prepare and improve the quality of the recruiting decision.

For these important reasons we publish our book, The Best Soccer Camps and dedicate the Spring Edition of our magazine, College Opportunities for Student Athletes to detailed reviews of only 100 summer camp operators, nationwide.

Stanford - Creating a great camp experience

Many colleges have developed summer camp programs to help players develop their skills and knowledge of the game. At Stanford we are taking the notion of the summer camp several steps further, creating a camp dedicated to identifying college prospects and preparing for the college experience. Here are a few of the ways Stanford is different and, we believe, better.

The camp coaches, selected from outstanding colleges across the country, are great teachers of the game and enjoy helping you reach your potential. Camp provides them with scouting opportunities to evaluate and recruit campers.

In the boys ID Camp, you help design your own curriculum. Instead of being forced into generic team training, Stanford offers a variety of topics on and off the field. You choose what fits your needs. Some topics planned for this summer include: developing a personal soccer fitness program, choosing a college, zonal defending systems, goalkeeper specific programs, improving wide area attacking, etc.

The girls camp is staffed with top coaches, international and college players. Many of Stanford’s present players were first identified at this camp. Select games under the stadium lights, goalkeeper specific training and an emphasis on technical perfection are all important elements of this camp.

Some of our finest Stanford student-athletes ... top college players ... live and eat with campers. Many have gone on to play with professional and national teams. Living and training with them, 24 hours a day, is a great opportunity for the aspiring student athlete.

At Stanford we want our camp environment to replicate that of the university by offering opportunities to challenge you and help you reach your potential.

             http://www.stanfordsoccer.com

-----------------------------------------------------

Summer Camps: Much More Than Training

Every camp here has been selected in our Best Soccer Camps book. The current edition of our Best Soccer Camps book contains only 100 selected camps from the more than 500 summer soccer camps.

Is this approach working? When have you seen so many camp ads and articles, anywhere, ever? Think about this. We talk to more serious soccer families and more truly dedicated college coaches, in one year, than anyone. And we help readers find the good camps that can affect their college futures, and their lives.

Now, consider what serious players do for top camps. Competitive players make the camp a success, elevate the level of play, and challenge other players. They stimulate the coaching staff. Everyone learns more and has more fun. And sometimes, a player catches the eye of a coach because, "Those campers were working so hard they looked like college players." ... the rest ... perhaps, is history!

Readers refer to our Student Athlete magazine as the "Consumer Reports" of College-Bound sports. We are proud to have earned your respect. When we compile our Special Campers Issues we invite only camps recommended in our Best Camps book to advertise. We've done our homework. All of these camps are good!

As parents of serious student athletes, we know how expensive, yet important, good camp selection is. Add the camp's cost, airfare, new clothes, new equipment, spending money, telephone, ground transportation and family gifts ... a residential camp’s cost can total $1000!

What are the alternatives, once you've learned how to how play, for getting noticed by the college coaches?

The three most important things to do, to increase your chances of playing sports in college are:

1. Participate in the ODP
2. Win state cup with your club team
3. Attend camp at the college where you hope to play

Camp selection is the only event YOU can control. By the end of the camp, both you and the coach will know if his college is in your future. If the news is not good, ask him to recommend colleges where you can play, and to use him as a reference.
Jim Blankenship's FGCU Soccer Camps ... much more than just training ...

“I like the challenge of developing a new program. FGCU is a hidden secret in soccer but I look forward to getting it started.” Coach Jim Blankenship

Jim Blankenship has been selected as the first-ever women’s soccer head coach at Florida Gulf Coast University. A veteran of nearly two decades in collegiate coaching, Blankenship will begin his duties in July. The Eagles’ first season of competition will be in the fall of 2007.

During his career, Blankenship’s teams have won three national championships, appeared in eight straight final fours, received two NCAA Division I national tournament bids and graduated over 40 all-Americans and 18 academic all-Americans. His collegiate head coaching record stands at 241-70-9.

This will be the fourth start-up program under Blankenship’s direction. Previously he developed new programs as the head coach at the University of Miami, Lynn University and St. Thomas University.

From 1998 to 2002, he developed the program at the University of Miami, leading the Hurricanes to the conference tournament in year two and receiving an NCAA tournament bid in just the fourth season of competition. Under his direction, the Hurricanes climbed as high as No. 14 in the national rankings and Blankenship's recruiting classes were recognized as some of the top-rated collegiate classes between 1998 and 2001.

Prior to UM, Blankenship spent 12 years as the first-ever head women's soccer coach at Lynn University. He earned NAIA Coach of the Year honors five times (1988, 1990, 1992, 1994 & 1995) and NSCAA Coach of the Year twice (1992 and 1994). Jim and George VanLinder (SFA) are, in our famly’s experience, the very best.

George VanLinder's SFA Soccer Camps ... much more than just training ...

“SFA is the best-kept secret in women's collegiate soccer, and I want to help spread the word."
Coach George VanLinder

Van Linder is a veteran who has compiled 13 years as a head coach at the NCAA Division I level. He most recently spent five seasons as the head coach at Baylor.

In three head coaching stops, Van Linder has compiled a career record of 124-99-20 (.551). In his time at Baylor, he led the Bears to a 31-52-9 record. His tenure included a 2006 trip to the Big 12 Tournament -- Baylor's first in five years -- two all-conference honorees and 41 Academic All-Big 12 selections. Under Van Linder, goalkeeper Ashley Noah was chosen for the U-20 U.S. National Team, and the squad recorded victories against nationally ranked teams Texas, Nebraska and Missouri.

Prior to taking over at Baylor, Van Linder logged four seasons as the head coach at SMU. His record there was 59-21-10, and he guided the Mustangs to four straight Western Athletic Conference regular-season championships. SMU reached the NCAA Tournament in three of Van Linder's four years in charge, winning at least its first-round game all three times and reaching the Sweet 16 in 1999. The Mustangs finished the season ranked in the national polls in three of their four years under Van Linder. The coach was named WAC Coach of the Year in 2000 and earned the Dallas Morning News Coach of the Year award in '99.

In addition to being a founder of the Student Athlete magazine in 1991, he was one of our two daughters’ first coaches (with Jim Blankenship FGCU below). George is now recruiting and training players to win conference championships and play at the coveted NCAA Tournament. He knows the way.

U Rochester Elite Camps ... much more than just training ...

The University of Rochester Elite Camp is a residential camp designed for the advanced player. The camp combines individual skills with advanced team tactics to improve the decision making and speed of play for each player. Competitive evening matches enhance development and provide players the opportunity to showcase their ability and potential to perform at the collegiate level.

The University of Rochester is highly selective being one of only 25 schools in the nation named a “new ivy” by Kaplan/Newsweek. Our first-class facilities include the $15 million dollar Goergen Athletic Center with state of the art varsity weight room, and 5,000 seat Fauver Stadium complete with fieldturf, lights, press box, locker rooms, and training room. The beautiful Rush Rhees Library holding over 3.5 million volumes recently completed an $8 million dollar renovation.

Camp director Chris Apple, in his 7th year as the men’s head coach, has led his teams to seven straight post-seasons, a 95-24-16 record and two conference championships. In 2007 his squad advanced to the DIII sweet 16 and finished ranked #10 in the NSCAA national poll.

Women’s head coach and girls camp director Terry Gurnett, in his 31st year, is the all-time career wins leader in DIII with a record of 386-121-57. His teams have won 11 conference titles, and in 2007 his team reached the post season for the 25th consecutive year.

SUPREME SOCCER ... The Tony Stevens Way

One of the nation’s finest, practical, youth coaches, Tony brings 30 years of experience to the program.
A consummate soccer trainer who inspires others with his enthusiasm and passion for the game, Tony is original and his method is proven. Dedicated solely to the development of “skillful” soccer for college-minded players, his philosophy is simple ... “train exactly as you will play.”

Master coach and clinician, Tony’s credentials include an English F.A. Badge, U.S.S.F. “A” license and an N.S.C.A.A. Advanced National Diploma. British by birth, he has played and trained in the UK, Germany and the US.
Tony’s methods work. SUPREME SOCCER graduates have earned scholarships and places on National Teams ... college coaches look to Tony for recommendations.

Our own daughter, Christina, traces her success in club and ODP to Tony's training; she was recruited by 20 colleges and received six soccer scholarship offers. She earned a full athletic scholarship at Southern Methodist and was named All-American. Today, as a college graduate, she trains with Tony at every opportunity.

Recommended by SA Magazine since '95, there is no personal trainer we can recommend more highly.
SUPREME SOCCER designs a program for your specific needs and conducts it on your home fields ... anywhere! Ask about Tony’s holiday and spring break camps in Florida; Moms and Dads relax at the beach while the kids learn college-level physical and mental skills.

“Each year we have identified several players who have become priority recruits for us during the fall at our Academy”

UCI Soccer Academy at The University of California, Irvine Men’s Soccer announces it’s summer Boy’s Soccer Academy with the coaches and players from the UC Irvine program. The Academy prepares players for the “next level” through demanding technical and tactical sessions while having competitive tournament play in the evenings.

Each year a number of quality players from the entire west region have attended this camp for the pre-college experience of a lifetime! Measure the level of your game with the coaches and players at UC Irvine. College prep with Princeton Review and study skills for the younger players is part of our curriculum. The instruction received at this Academy is an exceptional opportunity to be pushed and have a great time with soccer players that are all working towards the same goals.

UCI Men’s Soccer Coach George Kuntz, “Each year we have identified several players who have become priority recruits for us during the fall at our Academy. It has provided an opportunity for players to experience what it is like to be in a college dorm, eating in a cafeteria, and training twice dally in a college setting while playing games and having lectures throughout the week. South Orange County California is the perfect setting to prepare for your season while challenging yourself against the best from Southern California and the west region. After camp is done enjoy some of the best beach areas in the world or see if there is an MLS game 30 minutes from campus!”

We look forward to seeing you on the field at camp or at a tournament this coming year. South Orange County is where you want to be in the summer playing soccer and being challenged at the next level. Best of luck this season in soccer!

Cal Poly’s “Polytechnic” educational approach is world-renowned because it immerses students in a curriculum that combines cutting-edge academics principles with field-specific laboratory study. Unavailable at any other Division I university in America, this unique academic combination ensures our graduates are technically competent, practically trained, well prepared to make an immediate contribution in the workplace or transition seamlessly to graduate school. www.calpoly.edu

Cal Poly is situated in a world-class location: just minutes from many of California’s most beautiful beaches, coastal vineyards, lakes, the Big Sur wilderness and the quaint college town of San Luis Obispo. Cal Poly offers students perhaps the most scenic college location in America. What’s more, due to the area’s moderate climate, training, studying or just relaxing in the outdoors is a year round experience.

With a 6,000 acre main campus, an oceanographic research facility in Avila Beach and a 3,000 acre field laboratory north of Santa Cruz, California, Cal Poly offers students some of the richest and most comprehensive facilities of any campus in the United States.

Cal Poly Soccer is hot commodity on the national map. With a young new coaching staff that brings championship experience and energy to the program, the community has embraced the program with average supporters attendance at the beautiful, Alex G. Spanos stadium surpassing over 2,000 per game. It is truly becoming a soccer players dream school.

Cal Poly will be hosting an Elite Level High School Camp July 16-19th. All of the participants will have the opportunity to work with former professional player and current Men’s soccer head coach Paul Holocher and his Cal Poly staff. www.gopoly.com

UCF ... champions training champions.

Not all universities in Florida are created equal.

The annual in-state school tuition may only be $3,094 (not a misprint) for all Sunshine State residents, but that is where the similarities end. Located east of Orlando and minutes from some of America’s most beautiful beaches, UCF has a coaching staff unlike any other college soccer program.

When Knights’ head coach Amanda Cromwell took over the reigns at UCF in 1999, the former National Team member, WUSA professional and two-time All-American was reacquainted with her teammate from her playing days with the National Team, Michelle Akers. UCF’s all-time leading scorer, Akers is a 1989 graduate who enjoys giving back to her alma mater by serving as an assistant coach with the Black and Gold.

In the spring of 2000, Donna Fishter joined UCF as an assistant coach after serving as a coach at Anderson University and playing in the USL W-League. Colby Hale completed this exceptional staff when he came to UCF in the fall of 2003, bringing with him experience as a Division I player and coach and an Olympic Development Program coach.

Add the superb student-athlete support organizations and outstanding facilities at UCF, and you have a formula that attracts the nation’s best talent. If you want to be a part of a program that ranks as one of the top D-I schools in the country, attend this camp and familiarize yourself with the UCF coaching staff. And while you’re at camp, ask Coach Cromwell what it was like to play professionally for the WUSA’s Washington Freedom, Atlanta Beat and San Jose CyberRays.

Affordable tuition, great coaching, breathtaking campus, relaxing Florida beaches … what’s not to like about UCF?

Wake Forest ... very serious
about soccer and academics ...

The Wake Forest Women’s Soccer Program made the jump from club status to NCAA Division I and the ultra-competitive ACC in 1994 and after 3 short seasons, the Demon Deacons received their 1st NCAA Tournament bid in 1996 and have never looked back. The Demon Deacons have an impressive string of 12 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances!

Wake Forest made a serious commitment to both soccer programs by building the W. Dennie Spry Soccer Complex in 1997. It features a 3000 seat match Stadium and two fully lighted practice fields. The complex features locker rooms and an immaculate natural grass surface. Spry Soccer Complex is a premier soccer facility.

Wake Forest University is best described as a small school with a commitment to community and academic excellence. Undergraduate enrollment is under 4000 students so with an 18:1 student/teacher ratio, Wake Forest offers a personal educational experience. Wake Forest is consistently ranked U.S. News and World Reports National Top 30 for academics.

The 2008 Demon Deacons are coming off their second consecutive 2nd place ACC League finish and are closing in on an ACC Championship! Several current and former Wake Forest campers have helped in building our success!

College Costs – Scholarships are now replacing student loans ... for student athletes

Delray Beach, FL – October 5, 2008 - SASF has helped one million families reduce college education costs.

The Student Athlete Scholarships foundation, a volunteer non-profit group teaches BOTH families AND college coaches how to successfully recruit one another. Our foundation, SASF, helps both groups succeed.”

And just when it seemed life couldn’t get any more difficult …. It did.

The current financial crisis is a runaway beast, attacking anything in its path. Devouring home equity, banks, and insurance giants, this week it suddenly struck at all college-bound teenagers when it devoured student loans.

Families now realized that their lifeboat was missing. Though they never wanted to borrow for college expenses they always knew they could, if all else failed. And then one day, suddenly the lifeboat and the life preservers were gone … while the ship is swirling in a gigantic financial typhoon.

We are soccer parents in the 90's; and were struck by thousands of college scholarship opportunities created by the rapid growth of soccer, and dramatic college cost increases (CNN: college cost growth surpassed even health care costs.) We began exploring college preparation with our five year old and ten year old daughters.

See: http://www.soccer.com/channels/features.php?story=collegefree It's about the importance of beginning your preparation EARLY.

Our two daughters played soccer, got good grades in school, earned college soccer scholarships, then graduated DEBT FREE into great careers. A college education costs well over $100,000. The average college graduate today faces over $20,000 in undergraduate debts, while costs are still growing at 10% per year.

As our young daughters progressed through school and sports, we took good notes, and with the help of college coaches, wrote about what we were learning ... that was 1 million magazines ago!

Our readers know that college expenses can be offset with money from five different sources:
1.	Athletic scholarships
2.	Merit scholarships
3.	Work/study
4.	Grants
5.	Debt (but student loans are not currently unavailable)

When we understand that lofty prices asked by colleges (in Forbes Magazine’s America’s 50 Colleges, the top 10 averaged $49,000 per year) are primarily “fixed costs” (facilities and staff) while the “out-of-pocket” (cash) cost to fund a full scholarship student athlete is primarily food, costing only about $1000 per year, at Princeton or Centre College or The College of Charleston or Stanford or Indiana.

For this important reason, the actual cash (out-of-pocket) cost for a student athlete's food is still easily funded by universities, even in these difficult times. In fact, that $1000 may be the best investment a college can make in the marketing of its educational services to the public. College sports sell seats ... seats in the classroom and in the stadium, The most watched college event in the world is always the Army - Navy football game. Colleges know they need sports and they need student athletes to win games.

While college coach travel expense cash budgets are slim, their scholarships allotments are generous; the four kinds of scholarships money above can still help meet a family’s financial needs. College coaches are expected to win games … every season … they are betting their jobs on the work of teenagers! This pressure to survive makes coaches very creative at financing scholarships packages for players they need!

The GOOD NEWS for families of student athletes is, therefore, that in spite of today’s financial crisis, business as usual continues at college for student athletes, while students without athletic skills to make them more marketable, are facing one more new hurdle, for which we do not see a solution.

Soccer is our family’s favorite sport, it represents only about ten percent of college varsity (scholarship) sports; so our publications and methods are designed to work in ALL college sports.

In fact, we take great pride in demonstrating this versatility, by pointing to a reader whose athletic scholarship at prestigious Columbia University was $160,000 … her sport? CHESS! Call and we’ll send you a reprint of her success story from our magazine.

College coaches are always delighted when a well qualified (both athletically and academically) student athlete approaches them. Our publications are designed to help both sellers (families) and buyers (coaches) meet.

Ralph Lundy Soccer Camps ... much more than just training ...

College soccer enjoys the presence of some remarkable individuals whose contributions to the development of our young people last lifetimes. Coaching soccer is a conduit for their teachings about life, commitment and values.

We have read Coach Robert Mayo’s letter several times. We see Ralph Lundy’s system working ... inspiring confidence by improving skills ... then introducing the fun of learning tactics ... now challenging players to use what they have learned in real matches.

Read Robert Mayo’s letter and think about how Coach Lundy can help your player and your team. Attend his camp, meet players on his College of Charleston team. The respect and admiration they share for Coach Ralph Lundy says everything about the man.

----------- Coach Robert Mayo Letter follows ----------

“I am your average 40ish soccer coach. I grew up in Atlanta in the 1970s, playing soccer with coaches who held index cards and actually read our practice sessions out loud as we all struggled to embrace a game that is as complicated tactically as it is demanding technically. I will never forget working set plays with guys who couldn’t trap or pass (I was one of them!) properly. For nine years, I’ve coached recreational soccer in much the same way, the right drills, the right books the right plans being my foundation. Two years ago my youngest daughter went select and I was talked into going with her, there I began to learn what I wished I had seen so long ago. The best tactical plans will ALWAYS fail without individual tactical skill.

The typical American youth player has no tradition of play outside the weekly three hours of practice and one hour of game during season, they don’t watch soccer, their parents don’t play it with them, and neighborhood pick up play is almost non-existent. The fact is that even the typical mid level select player rarely touches the ball between practices! I was amazed that on my own Athena D team some girls didn’t even own a ball! So why do we spend precious time coaching tactical and team play when our players can often not even pass and receive correctly? How frustrating for the better players and disheartening for the coach (and the player who causes the breakdown) is the missed pass or fumbled reception?

The Ralph Lundy tradition has known and aggressively sought a system to solve the technical weakness inherent to the American player for years. If only I had known! For me the light came on when a Ralph Lundy Soccer Academy staff coach began to train my daughter and teach me how to use the theory of technical repetition in my coaching sessions. I was so happy with the results that I took a week off work that summer and went with my team to train at the Ralph Lundy Soccer Academy at West Georgia. What a week! I learned so much, but most of all, I saw the proof. Give your players the exact technical instruction on how to handle the BASICS of ball handling, then make them do it over and over in a fun challenging way. Once a player has mastered skillful play, then one can introduce the tactical aspect of the game. REPETITION is the key to the Lundy philosophy. It will recreate what the English or Brazilian youth learns automatically in their soccer culture.

That Lundy camp changed the way my kids play forever, it changed the way I coach forever. My kids now understand that the perfect pass, tackle, reception, or move is equal to any goal or won game. The pleasure and personal pride with which they play now has given me a new love for the game.”
