Play Test Review: adidas Telstar 18 Official World Cup Match Ball

Every four years the world comes together for the FIFA World Cup, one of the biggest global events in sports. Since 1970, adidas has brought us the official match ball, starting with the famous Telstar. Now, 48 years later, all eyes will be on the tournament in Russia, and the brand new adidas Telstar 18 Official Match Ball will be at the center of it all.

The ball features a six-panel design for a soft and true feel off the foot. I found that the feel on my foot was very soft and padded, while striking the ball felt true and powerful. It felt slightly lighter than previous adidas match balls I’ve played with, which was great in my opinion. Some match balls have a heavy feel off your foot, but I didn’t get that with the new Telstar. It felt light, responsive and proper, exactly how you would want a match ball to play.

The texture on the upper is the same we’ve seen before on other adidas match balls. This works a lot like adidas’ Non Stop Grip application on their cleats, allowing for a true and consistent touch in all weather conditions. I found that the grip worked really well, especially since it was a slightly rainy day when I was testing the ball. I didn’t have any skipping off my foot or lack of friction on my shots.

At the end of the day, I really enjoyed the new Telstar 18 match ball. It played exactly how I would expect a high quality match ball to. It was responsive off my foot, dribbling felt natural, striking was controlled and powerful, and it still retained a lot of grip in the wet weather. This ball is going to be one of my go to match balls for the coming months. Well done, adidas.
