German giants and reigning treble holders Bayern Munich will face Moroccan champions Raja Casablanca on Saturday will the right to call themselves “the best club ion the planet,” on the line in the FIFA Club World Cup™ final.
The sides took very different paths to the historic match. Raja Casablanca qualified for the event as the domestic league champion of host country Morocco. They defeated Oceania Football Confederation champions Auckland City FC, an amateur side, in the tournament’s play-in game, then went on to down CONCACAF kings Monterrey and shock CONMEBOL champions Atleico Mineiro.
It’s been a euphoric run. Case in point, after the Moroccans triumphed shockingly 3-1 against Ronaldinho’s Atletico side, the players hugged him as a hero and tussled (video here) for the right to take his jersey and each of his new Nike Tiempo Legend V cleats.
Bayern Munich, meanwhile, needed only to better Asian elites Guangzhou Evergrande to reach this stage, a task they achieved easily 3-0 on Tuesday. Pep Guardiola’s side is flush with talent, but will have to overcome the home support and an inspired Raja Casablanca team playing in the game of their lives.
Saturday’s game kicks off at 2:30 p.m. ET and is sort of a German Goliath versus a Moroccan David, if you will. A mismatch? Sure. A cinderella story? Maybe. A must watch game? No doubt.
