Today PUMA officially launched their new power cleat in Barcelona, Spain amid a flurry of anticipation and excitement. Already seen in limited edition camo and stampa (newsprint Balotelli) versions, the evoPOWER is built for big, fast and powerful players with exceptional natural touch.
It will be worn by Mario Balotelli, Cesc Fabregas and Marco Reus—players who tested the shoe in development stages— Thierry Henry and other top professionals. The evoPOWER replaces PUMA’s PowerCat cleat.
According to PUMA’s footwear designers, the evoPOWER is a “footwear revolution.” PUMA set out to create the sensation and power of playing soccer barefoot. Not sure about that, but the evoPOWER does have some cool new design elements and features.
Watch PUMA’s team detail all of the evoPOWER’s groundbreaking innovations in the below video.
The upper material, a flexible synthetic called AdapLite that feels unlike any other upper we’ve seen. It’s an extremely flexible synthetic that feels super thin, yet surprisingly durable. In theory, PUMA’s Everfit cage around the back of the midfoot ensures a supportive, reliable fit in heel.
While the AdapLite upper offers a barefoot feel for power, PUMA also wanted to create control and accuracy. The evoPOWER has a new Accufoam technology on the upper. These foam inserts supposedly offer added power to every shot and a clean strike zone for accuracy.
When just looking at the evoPOWER, the most obvious innovation is on the outsole. A GSF frame looks like a ribcage on the bottom on the foot. According to PUMA, this GSF (Gradual Stability Frame) mimics the bones in the foot for barefoot flexibility and enhances the foot’s natural power.
Though we haven’t seen the stunning Fluro Peach/Ombre Blue/Fluro Yellow evoPOWER on field yet, Fabregas and Balotelli have excelled in recent weeks while wearing the Camo and Stampa versions.
Fabregas scored two goals in Copa Del Rey play last week while donning the boot, while Balotelli provided an assist in the Stampa to help AC Milan earn a draw against Roma in Seria A action.
The Barcelona midfielder said all the field testing he did with the shoe paid dividens and he’s thrilled to finally be able to sport the evoPOWER in matches.
“Taking inspiration for a football boot from an actual foot sounds like the most obvious thing in the world, but in all the time I’ve spent in football, it’s the first time I’ve heard of this being done,” Fabregas said.
“When you try on these new boots, they are actually quite different to what we have worn before. They are so much more flexible; the way they bend with the natural shape of your foot really helps you to shoot harder.”
Reus added that the boot gives him added confidence and extra power when striking from long range, while Balotelli said the shoe is unlike any he’s ever worn and, “impressed me from the first day I tried it in training.”
