Real Salt Lake and Sporting Kansas City will face off on Dec. 7 to determine the best team in Major League Soccer. Here’s how it happened:
Sporting Kansas City won their series against the Houston Dynamo on Nov. 23 after an ugly, hard-fought draw. Sporting playing their fifth game in 17 days and the Dynamo’s sixth; both teams looked and played tired. 23 fouls were called in this physical match. SKC’s Kofi Sarkodie had a goal recalled in the 18th minute, after a close call revealed that he was offsides.Sporting KC took the series on the 2-to-1 goal differential from the first leg.
Real Salt Lake defeated the Portland Timbers 1-0 on Nov. 24 to seal their ticket to the championship game. This is the franchise’s second trip to the championship game. The Timbers needed to overcome a two-goal differential after losing 4-2 in the first leg on Nov. 3. While the Timbers ruled possession (54.9% to RSL’s 45.1%), Real Salt Lake beat the Timbers for the fourth and final time this year on Robbie Findley’s goal in the 29th minute.
The championship match will be played in Kansas City on Dec. 7 at 4pm.
